Getting to Know Yourself As a Reader
There are hundreds of people who read, but how many of them actually take the time to be curious as to what books are for them?
Take me for example, I'm not huge on being harsh on books that I've read. I'm more of a for pleasure reader although I do write a book review from time to time. I'm trying to broaden my abilities to review a book more critically as opposed to my usual reading for escapism. I'll be honest, that will usually be my main goal while reading books, but I do want to learn to be a more analytic reader.
For the first time, I want to attempt to do a 2020 reading challenge as another way to get me thinking outside of the box and to stretch my level of comfort in reading. Most times I am content with a YA fantasy book. I've noticed a lot of books seem to be repetitive with tropes and I'm totally fine with that, that's what makes them tropes - it's just that I'd like to taste test some other genres I never gave much time for in the past.
I urge you to try to do the same. Push your boundaries. Try classics or reading more books with authors of #ownvoices or POC. Try books outside of your normal genres of reading. You may realize it will expand your preferences in books and open your eyes to the world.
Below I've provided a list of different reading challenges to attempt for 2020.
2020 Challenges:
Not only should you consider the genres of what you're reading, but also the length of the books. Some people struggle to finish tomes that are 400 or 500+ pages. These can be hard if you have a lot of other commitments like taking care of kids, school, work, etc. You may want to delve into smaller books or possibly standalones so you don't have to devote as much memory or time to.
Last but not least, you should look into trying different formats of books! You never know if you'll like it til you give them a try. When I say formats I mean different mediums like: - physical books (hardback, paperback, trade) - ebooks (digital, online) - audiobooks or audio CDs (via audible and other stores) Personally, I'm really excited to give audiobooks more of a shot in my reading. I haven't gotten to listen to many, in fact, I've only listened to the beginning of 2 or 3 of them so I feel like I need to give them another chance to stick. Not to mention, some audiobooks you may not enjoy the narrator, but that’s okay because there are so many out there to try!
What formats do you normally read? Are you new to audiobooks or are you a pro? I'd appreciate it if you could put any audiobook recommendations in the comments below! Plz and thank you! :)
